Christopher Kane denies Balenciaga rumours

Christopher Kane is the first in what will no doubt be a long line of possible suitors to officially deny rumours that he will succeed Nicolas Ghesquière as creative director of Balenciaga.

On Friday, French news magazine Le Nouvel Observateur published an article claiming Kane would join the fashion house on December 1 - the day after Ghesquière will officially step down - however they failed to cite a source. The piece led to a flurry of excitement with many believing the news to be true as the publication is reportedly a respected and reliable title.

However, a spokesperson for Kane has since released a statement denying the move. "Rumours surrounding Christopher Kane's appointment as creative director of Balenciaga are unfounded," they told WWD .

The London-based Central Saint Martins graduate currently produces two collections a year for his eponymous label, which shows at London Fashion Week, as well as for Versace's sister line Versus, which shows in Milan.

He is one of a number of designers who have been touted as possible Ghesquière successors, others include duo Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra and Mary Katrantzou.

Balenciaga CEO Isabelle Guichot has confirmed that they have a "short list" of designers and will announce the new creative lead "as soon as we're ready."

As we know from the great Dior debacle, these things can take a very long time and see many names churned through the rumour mill before any official announcement is made. There's also the possibility that whoever does take over at Balenciaga will have to leave a senior position at another big design house to do so, leading to yet more speculation as to who will fill their shoes.

Ghesquière, who has helmed the house for 15 years and is credited with transforming it from an ailing brand to one of the biggest luxury fashion houses in the world, announced his imminent departure from the label on Nov 5. He is yet to confirm his next venture, although it is expected it will be an eponymous label.
